GEN coverage in the Guardian - 30th Oct 2012

Our installation at Ferrier's Barn was completed ahead of the 1st Aug 2012 FiT review but unfortunately we were not able to proceed with the Bures Primary School project.

GEN was named the best Community Energy Project 2011 at Suffolk - Greenest County awards last night.

GEN members met with Jenny Willis from Co-operatives UK to assist with the writing of a report on Community Energy. The final report has just been issued - click here to read it.

GEN was named winner of the Environmental Awareness award at the Colchester Business Awards on Friday night. Will and Simon were there to collect the award.

Our "How we did it" guide, which might be useful to other groups looking to set up a similar community energy enterprise, can be found on the FAQ page.

Find Out More

GEN will host a series of public meetings to allow potential investors the opportunity to find our more about our plans and to ask questions.

  • 21st April - Birch Memorial Hall - drop in session 5pm to 8pm
  • 28th April - Colchester Rugby Club - drop in session 5pm to 8pm
  • 6th May - Nayland Church Hall - drop in session 5pm to 8pm

We hope to see you at one of these events. We will showcase the designs for the site and our Directors will be on hand to answer questions. Just drop in at any time between 5pm and 8pm to speak with us.

Progress to Date

Our project is part of a larger commercial scheme although we will own our panels and generation capacity independantly. The whole project has planning permission and a grid connection agreement in place. Negotiations with the land owner are at an advanced stage.

Ground clearance and access work has started and we anticipate that we will install panels in the Community project in July.

All we need is investment from the community to make this a reality. It is an amazing opportunity and one of the first of it's kind in the UK.

Project Outline

The key features of the project are;

  • 1.7MWp of solar PV
  • Investment sought - from £500K to £1.5M
  • Annual income starting at £185K in first year
  • Feed in Tariff income index linked
  • Export income likely to rise about inflation
  • Generate between £10K and £20K for community benefit projects each year
  • Member interest between 3% and 6%
  • 25 year project life time

This project will operate in much the same way as our earlier successful schemes. We will earn income from Feed in Tariffs and by selling our electricity. However the scale of this project means we will be able to engage in much more significant community benefit projects.

Why Invest?

  • We expect to offer a fair rate of interest on shares in this scheme
  • Through the company's profits we will be able to install renewable energy systems at some of our public buildings such as Nayland Village Hall
  • We will be adding a further 1.7MW of renewable energy capacity into the local energy system further reducing our dependance of imported fossil fuels
  • An investment in GEN may be better than purchasing a solar PV system for your own home; no concerns about moving house, or maybe your house doesn't have a suitable roof
  • As a member in a co-operative organisation you can get involved in the organisation and decision making process

The initial offering will close on 8th May 2015.
